POLAR BEAR WATER SOURCE HEAT PUMP MFG. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Polar Bear Heat Pumps were designed and manufactured on the following basic principles: 1. Manufacture units which are: “Simple in design, yet Extremely Efficient while maximizing both heating and air conditioning output. 2. Use components which are overrated for their function to absolutely insure long life expectancy, thereby, minimizing service requirements. 3. Select only high quality components which are readily accessible to any service contractor, thus protecting the customer’s long term investment re repairs, availability and cost. 4. Create superlative, “Electrical Diagrams”, in full colour reflecting exactly the wire colours and layout to make it easy for a competent service person to understand. 5. Provide an easy to read and understand manual for the Home Owner and a “Technical Manual”, for the installation and service contractor with more detailed information. Special Note: Most of Polar Bear’s competitors rely heavily on Circuit Boards or Computer modules which do break down, forcing the customer to purchase from the original manufacturer, often at exorbitant costs, if even, the part is still being offered. Polar Bear does have a generic circuit board, used as an, “Anti-Short Cycle Relay”, and to provide, “Lock-out Protection”, for the compressor, but it can be bypassed in an emergency if indeed it is the failed component. This generic component is readily available to any service contractor. This statement is very important considering a well designed properly installed unit should last 20 or more years. Change a few major components and the unit will provide another 20 years of service. Polar Bear Heat Pumps are sold to provide the absolute best in Heating and Air Conditioning, the BOTTOM LINE being, our customers ultimate long term satisfaction in comfort and economy. Motto: “The Comfort and efficiency you perceive you are buying is exactly what you get.” From the President and Owner: “Manufacturing the best Geo-Thermal Heat Pumps is not just my Business, more importantly it is truly my passion.” Engineering a project effectively, is equally as important as the Heat Pump is. Polar Bear strives to provide the very best engineering available to achieve the efficiencies and comfort Water Source Heat Pumps are capable of delivering. Polar Bear Features: Cabinet: Satin coat galvanized steel, painted with the highest quality, “Powder Coat Paint”, then baked in hot ovens to seal and harden. This process yields a Cabinet that will look great and maintain its good looks long term. More importantly, when it comes time for resale, a clean sharp looking unit creates the impression of efficiency and reliability. All water pipe openings have secure fitting rubber grommets to protect against vibration and electrolysis from dissimilar metals. e.g. copper tubes/steel cabinet. All PB Cabinets have 1” thick acoustically lined special sound absorbing material, double the insulation compared to all other competitors. Polar Bear units are the quietest in the industry, no double clicking the volume on the TV remote. The “Condensate Pan”, is made of, “Stainless Steel”, it will never need repair unlike galvanized metal, which rusts, or plastic which cracks. Special Note: There are reversible units, Up/Down, built in the Industry by my competitors in which not all the condensate on air conditioning flows out to the drain but stagnates in the unit. Water stagnating over a period of time will develop molds and bacteria, possibly creating a very serious health concern. This water which is unable to flow out of the unit often flows down wiring and directly into the elaborate circuit boards, located in the lower section of these Up/Down units, creating unneeded failures. Polar Bear Electrical Control Cabinetry is located above the condensate pan and drains, it is absolutely impossible for any electrical failures to occur resulting from plugged drains or misguided design. A Heat Pump is a significant investment, we at Polar Bear believe our “Cabinets” should be sturdy, attractive, and functionally very smart to help ensure the heat pumps value is maintained over the expected life of the unit. Air Coils: PB Air Coils utilize the latest technology in rifle tubing, lanced fining, along with the greatest primary and secondary surface area for energy transfer. Said another way; PB air coils have per unit size more available heat transfer surface area then any other North American competitor. Designing the most efficient air coils in the industry for use in PB product line is paramount and absolutely necessary to the outstanding efficiency and energy output expected in all Polar Bear units. Air Coils from the smallest 1 Ton to 10 Ton Extreme units are the largest in the industry affording the very best in Energy Transfer surface area for both heating and cooling. In cooling mode, fabulous dehumidification results directly from the oversized air coils.. Fan Efficiency: Polar Bear uses only ECM Fan Motors, “Electronically Commutated Motors”, standard in the industry. All Heat Pumps come with a minimum of 5 fan Speeds including Super Low and Medium Low Speed for continuous extremely quiet and efficient movement of air flow throughout your home. These lower speeds operate for pennies a day yet provide 24hour circulation for continuous Air Filtration, “cleaner home with fewer allergens”, and a more evenly heated home. On start up, fans take up to 20 seconds to gently attain set speeds, no loud banging duct work. Customers have the option to run the fan on either Super Low Speed or Medium Speed right from the thermostat. Continuous fan operation is especially useful in moving warm air from a room with a high sun loading, or heat created from a burning fireplace to the rest of the house. Polar Bear Dealers have the capability to change one or all the fan speeds for exacting air movement requirements. Water Coil The size and number of Water Coils matched to each Polar Bear Heat Pump are larger in capacity then all other manufacturers, that is an undisputable fact. Polar Bear units consistently out perform all other makes in both total BTU output and COP efficiency, because they are equipped with water coils which have in total, far larger heat transfer surface areas. In closed loop applications where BTU output drops because of the lower incoming water temperature, BTU output is only marginally decreased in a Polar Bear unit, 10% to 20% . All other manufactures see a 20% to 30% or greater drop in Btu output on closed loops. PB units provide 100% of your heating requirements all Winter long, the expensive super inefficient Duct Heater auxiliary heat almost never comes on, PB customers enjoy the extreme efficiency from the Heat Pump all Winter long. Most competitive units are undersized for the homes they are installed in, and rely on the expensive duct heater heat all winter long. These units are not only much more expensive to operate but life expectancy is reduced dramatically resulting from the increased operational hours to do the same job a Polar Bear unit easily accomplishes. The Tube carrying the water is designed in a, “Clover Leaf Shape”, but with up to 8 convolutions to maximize surface area for heat transfer. If the pipe freezes, because a safety switch did not react fast enough or has failed, there is rarely any damage done as this shape simply expands as the water freezes, thus protecting the customers investment in PB Heat Pump. The Water Coil can be ordered as Copper for most “Closed Loops” or Copper-Nickel for “Open Loops” where water conditions can be more corrosive over time. There is no magic to producing an Excellent Heat Pump which maximizes on Btu output and efficiency, simply, more surface area yields increased BTU output and efficiency. Polar Bear wants our customers to have the very best. Other companies advertise they have this philosophy, but few conform to truly creating the best they can. Compressor Copeland Scroll Compressors are used in all our larger Polar Bear Heating & Air Conditioning Heat Pumps. Rotary compressors are utilized in our smaller Condominium units. Both these compressors operate more efficiently than Piston compressors and are more durable. Since all Heat Pump Competitors have access to the exact same “Compressors”, how does Polar Bear differentiate. PB emphasizes proper sizing of the Heat Pumps output to the Heat Loss and Heat Gain of your home. At Polar Bear, since the cost of the properly sized unit to a home is marginally more than an undersized Heat Pump system, why would you want to install a Heat Pump that will not do 100% of your homes heating or cooling needs. Yet this is the standard practice in the industry. PB makes available for the “Residential Marketplace”, through its Dealer network Compressors nominally sized from: Single Stage Compressors 16,000 Btu to 83,000 Btu Dual staged compressors from 20,000 Btu through to 60,000 Btu. Commercially, compressors up to 60 Tons in a variety of voltages There are so many good reasons for staging; energy conservation, efficiency, and evenness of heat throughout the home.. Staging is particular useful on larger home retrofits where the Duct Work originally installed is smaller then optimal. , Circulator Pumps for “Closed Loops” The Closed Loop Circulators chosen by PB are made by a German/French Corporation called, “Wilo”. These wet rotor circulators are used throughout the World and are now well represented in North America. Polar Bear recently switched from a popular brand of circulators which are still being used by our competitors, but the new Wilo Pumps are simply the “Best”. Higher flow rates with less energy consumed equals greater performance and lower cost.. The Wilo circulators are built with stainless steel shafts, not out of a ceramic material, which do break. The craftsmanship, the finish of the pumps, the overall ruggedness is superior in this class of pumps to any other pump in the marketplace. PB is the first in the industry to adopt the very best, taking care of our customer’s investment by providing better built heat pumps which are in part, the reason PB units produce more Heat than any other unit in the market place per compressor size. Brass Flanges “only” are utilized to connect the Circulators to the Heat Pump System as opposed to cast iron which rust and can snap if over tightened. Polar Bear uses only Type (L) copper, (type L copper refers to thicker wall copper then what conventionally might be used) internally, again ensuring a long life without service calls. These, “Wilo”, circulators are the quietest pumps ever tested by Polar Bear, no noise, our customers just sleep better. Special note: In almost all Polar Bear Heat Pumps, the Wilo circulators used in, “Closed Loop Applications”, are installed in the piping just outside the Heat Pump, not mounted on the wall. Polar Bear, “Installations”, are neater. Hot Water Circulator and Desuperheater The Hot Water pump is also made by, “Wilo”, but the pump housing and flanges are 100% bronze as they are used in your Domestic Hot Water circuit. These pumps circulate water from the pre-heat hot water tank to the hot water coil in the Heat Pump called a “Desuperheater” and back to the pre-heat or main hot water tank. This process continues as long as the compressor is working, whether it be on the heating or air conditioning cycle. This process reduces your hot water costs by almost 1/2. What’s a “Desuperheater”: A Desuperheater is a small 6000 btu water coil which absorbs a portion of the hottest heat directly from the compressor. Utilizing a double wall heat exchanger, it provides very economical supplemental heat to your “Domestic Hot Water Tank”, on heating and totally free heat when the heat pump is in air conditioning mode. This heat is supplemental as it only produces hot water when the heat pump is either heating or cooling your home. This method of heating your water in not an, on demand feature, but does greatly reduces your domestic hot water costs. Reversing Valve Today all proper functioning Reversing Valve Bodies are made from Brass and in 20 years of manufacturing at Polar Bear, no failure as ever occurred. At Polar Bear we take great care in the brazing of the Reversing Valve into the refrigerant piping, most notably, keeping the main body of the reversing valve cool with wet clothes drenched in water. Wetting again after each of the 4 tubes has been brazed, thus ensuring the proper operation of this valve in a functioning system. This valve is very important to the operation of the Heat Pump since it directs the refrigerant to either the Air Coil or Water Coil thereby putting the heat pump into either Air Conditioning or Heating. When Polar Bear customers want their Air Conditioning to come on, a proper functioning reversing valve provides the so desired cool comfort on a hot summer day. TX Valve The TX valve is the device which regulates the flow of the refrigerant through the Heat Pump. This valve reacts to the differing conditions always keeping the Heat Pump operating at its optimal performance capabilities. The importance of this device cannot be underestimated, therefore Polar Bear Heat Pumps have married the absolute best performing TX valve to optimize performance regardless of the Heat Pump output. Electrical Control Components Heat Pumps are brought on duty to heat and or cool by, “Thermostats”, which are monitoring the temperature of the surrounding environment. When a Thermostat senses a need to heat or cool, a low voltage electrical signal is carried through the thermostat wiring to the heat Pump. This low voltage signal energizes relays in the heat pump which in turn start compressors, fan motors, water circulators, and or reversing valves. To start any of these motors, it is no different than turning on a, “Light Bulb”, in your home using a light switch, except for the thermostat which starts the action. It is in the, “Control”, that PB has a major philosophical difference from the many of its competitors in this industry. Most competitors have filled their units with circuit boards and computers to facilitate the very non-complex function of starting and stopping. Polar Bear employs standard relays, but relays which are over-rated for their function. Reliability is increased dramatically. Parts are readily available to any local service contractor. Customers are not forced to spend exorbitant amounts of money purchasing entire circuit boards because a simple resistor has failed, if indeed that particular circuit board is even made anymore. Murphy’s Law. Polar Bear does employ a very small circuit board for, “Anti-Short Cycle and Lock-out protection”. This control component is a standard off the shelf item that can be purchased through any refrigeration wholesaler. Further to that, if it ever did mal-function, it can be bypassed for a short period of time with little or no risk to a proper functioning heat pump. Other than the Air Coil, which has no moving parts, there are, NO ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT SPECIFIC PARTS, the heat pump will always be reparable and therefore available to provide the efficient heating and cooling comfort our customers have invested in. PB has the capabilities to design controls to do a multitude of functions for our Dealers, or more importantly, Dealers have the ability to design controls themselves thereby solving installation challenges that our competitors simply cannot do. Heat Pumps harnessed with circuit boards are designed to do one thing only; they cannot be manipulated to provide numerous other functions which may be needed. All electrical components from the Low Voltage Transformer to the Compressor Contactor are over-rated for the function. At all times, it is our customers’ investment we at Polar Bear are truly protecting, not PB’s bottom line by cutting corners. Flow Meter and Temperature Thermometers: Polar Bear quotes include in the cost the price of a Flow Meter which is connected to the return water piping. The Flow Meter serves several purposes; First, because there is a clear tube, the loop fluid is visible to view, any bubbles that might be in the system can be monitored. Second, a stainless steel float device indicates rate of water flow when the Heat Pump is operating. Thirdly, by multiplying the gallons per minute by 500 lbs., times the temperature differential between the water solution entering the heat Pump and the temperature of the Water exiting the Heat Pump, the amount of free energy absorbed or collected from the earth can be easily calculated. Polar Bear provides (2) thermometers with large red L.E.D. indicators which display the incoming and exiting temperatures. On most new units, (2) additional thermometers are supplied indicating Return Air and Supply Air Temperatures. Utilizing these two devices, home owners will know how well their Heat Pump System is performing at all times. Polar Bear is the only company in the market place allowing customers full knowledge of the systems performance right from day one. Secure Start: Copeland’s latest component which when installed limits the maximum number of amps drawn by the compressor to 45 amps. Benefits include, on start up House lights do not dim, extended compressor contactor life and compressor windings are less likely to be overheated. In addition, the controlled amperage on start up allows for the connection of smaller generators to be used to run the Heat Pump. At this time, the largest compressor in which this device can be installed is limited to 83,000 Btu and smaller compressors. Heat Pumps Manufactured by Polar Bear Water Source Heat Pump Mfg. Inc. A.
